"Scolari was doing a very good job, Avram Grant was doing a very good job, Guus Hiddink is a great manager and Mourinho is a good manager but each one decides how to approach games. I like the style of Grant, Scolari or Hiddink – it's right for the game.''
So the powerful machine Mourinho built did not impress Benitez compared to the Blues shaped by Grant, Scolari or Hiddink? "These four managers are good managers but the other three are doing really well and I prefer this style,'' said Benitez, who loathed Mourinho's carping about Liverpool during their six European matches.
"I have to defend my club. It doesn't matter against whom. Clearly, when you play against a top side like Chelsea a lot of times, sometimes you will have words with the other manager but you can do it in a different way. I am really pleased with the way they are doing it now. The main thing for me is the stature of the club. Chelsea are a big club, a fantastic club.''
The more Rafael Benitez reveals of himself, the more complicated a man he appears. (...) Jose Mourinho is 1,000 miles away but remains at the forefront of Benitez's thoughts.
