Portugal cocaine busts soar to near record
23.03.06 1.20pm By Axel Bugge
LISBON - Portugal has seized about 17 tonnes of cocaine so far this year, just under the record 18 tonnes it captured in 2005, as smugglers increasingly turn to its open coastline to reach Europe's markets, police said today. Portuguese authorities said that in an operation carried out with the Spanish police, they had seized 3.78 tonnes of cocaine and broke up a ring of smugglers using Portugal as a staging ground for Europe. "We hope that the (criminal) organisations know that investing in Portugal at this moment is a bad idea," Jose Braz, assistant national director of the police's drug unit, told reporters at a news conference with the seized cocaine piled up behind him.

The Algarve - Playground of Portugal
by Felicity Walker
The Algarve area of Portugal, which covers the southern-most part of the country, is an incredibly diverse region. Any holidaymaker can find an enjoyable way of filling their holiday hours. Add in a warm, sunny climate almost year round, and it's hardly surprising that the Algarve region is the major tourist area in Portugal. With all that sunshine, naturally many holidaymakers come in search of beaches, and they're not disappointed. With around 270km of coastline, including everything from wide sandy beaches to secluded inlets, there's something for everyone. Add to that a wide variety of accommodation with luxury resorts near bustling towns to quiet villages, and there's no doubt everyone is catered for.
