Mourinho master of all he surveys

With his squad enhanced and his main rivals either in periods of discord or transition, life could hardly be better for Mourinho. So all is well, for the moment

Coat of honour
JOSÉ MOURINHO HAS CHALLENGED Europe’s leading designers to come up with a new overcoat for him to wear on the touchline, but says that he will choose his favourite not on the basis of fashion but who pledges the most money to help children with cancer.

Mourinho’s famous grey coat was bought by a Chelsea fan for £22,000 at auction this summer, the money going to CLIC Sargent, the club’s official charity. That Armani version is now in a museum at Stamford Bridge.

“I will go with the designer who pays the most to the charity,” Mourinho said. “It can be Armani, Zegna, Boss, whoever, although of course it must be a coat that I feel comfortable in. It must be quality and make me feel good.

José Mourinho’s father recently acknowledged that the torch had been passed to the next generation

Rich rewards
ASKED WHY HE HAD teamed up with adidas in an undisclosed three-year deal — believed to be worth at least £1 million per year [1.446.000 euros] to the Chelsea manager — José Mourinho was typically bashful. “Because they are at the top of their trade,” he said. “And so am I.”

The Portuguese has become one of the sportswear giant’s global coaching ambassadors and joins a roster including David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. Adidas also has a £90 million, eight-year deal in place to become Chelsea’s kit suppliers from 2006.

Mourinho has been cashing in on his success, popularity and good looks with various commercial deals. He has been starring in a high-profile campaign for American Express and features in billboards in his home country to promote a Portuguese bank [BPI, Mourinho recebe cerca de 750 mil euros por ano e meio de contrato].

He has been inundated with offers, including televisions shows and newspaper columns, and is expected to tie up one or two other partnerships on top of the salary — thought to be around £5 million [7.234.245 euros por ano] plus hefty bonusesthat makes him the best-rewarded manager in the world.

1.446.000 euros + 750.000 euros + 7.234.245 euros [sem contar com bónus] = 9.430.000 euros
